SOUTHERN PACIFIC 4449
A nineties version of the Shasta Daylight. Northern
4449 has a matched set of passenger equipment on an
August 31, 1991, excursion at Redding, Calif.

    

CONRAIL 5503
Auto rack train ML-470Y holds eastbound at
Voorheesville. N.Y. for extrance into Selkirk
Yard during the severe Northeast Winter of
'94. The cold and snow raised havoc with rail
transportation during one of the worst
winters on record. 5503 is one of EMD's state
of the art SD60M locomotives.

POWHATAN ARROW
Class J, No. 602, departs Cincinnati Union Terminal
September 1957. The Powhatan Arrow, train No. 26
was the day train to Norfolk, Va.
    

NORFOLK & WESTERN 610
4-8-4, class J, awaits another assignment at
Roanoke, Va., August 27, 1958. No. 610 was
built in Roanoke as an unstreamlined class J1,
part of group 605-610, in 1943. In 1945 the
group was streamlined and reclassified class J.

NJ TRANSIT 4105
It's a cold January, 1982 day at Bay Head
Junction, N.J. and Transit's GP40P awaits the
next commuter run to the city. One of the
aging E8s also waits its turn in the
background. 4105 was one of Jersy Central's
group of locomotives built in 1968, numbered
3671-3683.
    

LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD
A train of Metropolitan commuter cars head
east through Massapequa Park, N.Y. bringing
home commuters on a hot July 1971 day.

UNION PACIFIC
Rebuilt E9s pull UP's classy excursion train
exiting Chilcoote Tunnel heading west toward
Portola, Calif. in celebration of Portola
Railroad Museum's 10th anniversary. The
event, July 1-4, 1994, included excursions
through the Feather River Canyon. E9s 951,
963B and 949 were rebuilt to GP38-2
standards by VMV Manufacturing in
Paducah, Kentucky.
    

NOW AND THEN
A Burlington Northern coal train moves past
the Newcastle, Wyo. station with three new
EMD SD70MACs, June 12,1994. Not much
has seemed to have changed since Burlington
SD9s, sporting new and old colors, passed the
same station a quater of a century earlier on
July 8, 1968.

CHICAGO & NORTH WESTERN 8607
Equipped with ditch lights and plow, new
General Electric C44-9W locomotive heads up
a train on the UP at Schuyler, Neb., June 10,
1994. The second unit, 8558, is a fairly new
C42-8. No. 8607 is one of C&NW's initial order
of 65 Dash 9s.
    

SUSQUEHANNA & WESTERN
On Friday evening, July 29, 1994, New York,
Susquehanna & Western 2-8-2 No. 142 and
Black River & Western 2-8-0 No. 60 steam
softly at Whippany, N.J. on the Morristown &
Erie Railway. To the left is Whippany Railway
Museum's newly restored Jersey Central
observation, Jersey Coast. The equipment
was displayed as part of Whippany Railway
Museum's Railroad Festival '94.

CSX 7733
Two new General Electric C40-8W locomotives have
westbound train No. 353 well in hand around the curve at
Mance, PA, October 26, 1991. No. 7733 and mate 7734 are
GE's latest state-of-the-art 4000 h.p. diesels.
    

PENNSYLVANIA 9631
Alco model FA-2, Pennsy class AF16, is a 1600 h.p. road
locomotive. No. 9631 leads an A-B-A set of these
Schenectady, NY built units on a merchandise freight
through Tipton, PA, in 1961.

BURLINGTON NORTHERN 9408
General Motors Electro-Motive's new state of
the art SD70MAC locomotives started to
appear in early 1994 as the beginning of a
huge 350-unit order to the Burlington
Northern. SD70MACs introduced self
steering trucks, A.C. propulsion and new
colors and design to the road. A trio of these
4000 h.p. brutes is seen on one of many BN
coal trains at West Pedro, Wyo., June 12,
1994.
    

SAN DIEGAN
Amtrak's morning train from Santa Barbara,
Calif., is seen there in December 1991, prior to
departure to San Diego. Locomotive 509 is one
of twenty new General Electric Dash 8-32BWH
based in Los Angeles and will see service on long
distance trains such as The Sunset Limited.


NS NORFOLK SOUTHERN
TripleCrown RoadRailer service provides trailer service over
rail and road. Norfolk Southern train No. 255 is seen passing
the Granite City, IL depot, October 7, 1989. The depot has
since been razed. TripleCrown service has expanded to the
northeast over Conrail's tracks in 1993.
    

GATEWAY WESTERN
It's late afternoon, January 20, 1990, and the East St. Louis-
Jacksonville local, L101, departs East St. Louis, MO,
sometime after four p.m. Chicago, Missouri and Western
diesels 2037 adn 3013 are the power today.

VIRGINIA & TRUCKEE INYO
4-4-0, Virginia & Truckee's locomotive No. 22, Inyo, is
seen on display during the California State Railroad
Museum's tenth anniversary celebration in Sacramento,
CA in May of 1991. The Inyo is now owned by the
Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, Nevada.
    

THE SENATOR
One of Amtrak's Washington to Boston through
trains, No. 176, The Senator, crosses Pelham Bay
Draw in the Bronx, N.Y. General Electric built
E60 electric locomotive No. 963 powers the train
today, June 27, 1979.

NORFOLK & WESTERN 1218
The bigger the steam locomotive, the more in-
pressive it is when in action. Norfolk Southern's
Norfolk & Western class A articulated 2-6-6-4
locomotive pleases the crowd while turning the
train on the wye at Iaeger, W. Va., August 7,
1991, during the National Railway Historical So-
ciety's annual convention.
    

WASHINGTON IRVING
One of Amtrak's refurbished French built Turboliner
train sets travels north up the beautiful Hudson River
Valley. Train No. 255 has just rounded the bend after
passing the Peekskill, N.Y., Metro-North Station.
