SOUTHERN PACIFIC
It's George Washington's birthday 1993 and
the crews are out fighting nature. An Espee
Rotary plow clears track 2 at Yuba Pass, Calif.
    

FRISCO
The St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, or more
commonly called Frisco, rostered a total of four
Raymond Loewy styled Fairbanks-Morse model
H-12-44 diesel switchers. Two of this group, built
in June 1951, are seen in Tulsa, Okla., February
1970.

ESCANABA & LAKE SUPERIOR 400
In a Great Northern inspired paint scheme, Es-
canaba & Lake Superior GP38-2 No. 400 is seen
at Crivitz, Wis., on a bright winter day, February
8, 1989. The General Motors EMD unit is in
charge of a sizable train this day.
    

CHICAGO & ILLINOIS MIDLAND 31
One of two unique EMD built RS1325 locomotives
is seen on the C&IM at Springfield, Ill., March
18, 1978. The units ride on Flexi-Coil trucks and
are a cross between a Geep and a yard switcher.
EMD's model number reflects the horsepower of
each locomotive, 1325.

M.B.T.A. 1921
This former BN GP9 1921 has been rebuilt by the
"T" employees to become the Boston Terminal
switcher. The only thing the engine lacks is
H.E.P., otherwise it can run on any New England
railroad. The engine was dedicated to Billy
"Zeke" Marsden who was part of the crew and
was taken by cancer shortly after its dedication
on April 12, 1991. The B&M Minuteman herald
has been changed to read "Boston Commuter Ser-
vice". 1921 is pictured in B&M maroon and dulux
at Boston Engine Terminal, July 16, 1991
    

BURLINGTON 113-A
An A-B set of GM FT diesel locomotives rests by
the enginehouse, Lincoln, Neb., April 1961. The
FT model locomotive, the diesel that started the
demise of the mainline steam locomotive, was
generally manufactured in semi-permanently
coupled sets, as seen here.

METRO-NORTH
Metro-north Commuter Railroad FL9's 519 and 5048,
both in the road's new red, blue and silver color
scheme, rest at Danbury, Connecticut, February 26,
1984. MNC is renumbering its FL9's in the 500 series,
as seen in this view. The two electric/diesel-electric
units, formerly New Haven Railroad 2039 and 2048,
were owned by Penn Central and Conrail before their
acquisition by Metro-North.
    

STEAM IN ACTION!
The triple-star event of the National Railway Historical
Society's convention sponsored by the Collis P.
Huntington Chapter was the parallel run-by of a pair of
Van Sweringen Berskhires through Hurrican W. Va.,
August 9, 1991. Both are products of Lima, NKP 765,
1944: PM 1225, 1941

PERE MARQUETTE
Berkshire 1225 pauses after making a parallel
run-by with Nickel Plate 765 at Hurricane, W.
Va., during the Collis P. Huntington Chapter,
National Railway Historical Society's conven-
tion, August 9, 1991. In 1941, Lima Locomotive
Works delivered 1225 along with a group of N-1
class Super-Power locomotives numbered 1216-
1227 to Pere Marquette.
    

TENNESSEE CENTRAL 401
Alco DL-721A rests beside the turntable pit at TC's
roundhouse in Nashville, Tenn. on August 18, 1967
just one year before a new home with the Louisville
& Nashville.

RICHMOND FREDERICKSBURG & POTOMAC
The crew is on board and a three unit set of
Electro-Motive GP40-2's is ready to go to work.
Potomac Yard, Alexandria, Va., August 20, 1977.
    

NJ TRANSIT
Train No. 1203 is headed north at Hohokus, N.J. with
ex-Chicago & North Western 420. The consist will
traverse the famous S-curve at Waldwick before
reaching its destination. September 8, 1983.

PW
Providence & Worcester's newest locomotives in
the new paint scheme and logo. These General
Motors GP38 diesel-electric locomotives, shown
at Worcester, Mass., are used in the railroad's
freight and passenger service on their tri-state
Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island
routes.
    

THE BATTEN KILL RAILROAD
"Serving Washington County" with freight and
excursion passenger service. The Batten Kill's
Alco RS-3 No. 605 passes near East Greenwich,
N.Y., with their colorful passenger excursion.
Locomotive was purchased from the Vermont Ry.

CHICAGO & NORTH WESTERN 1385
Lodi, Wis.: On this sunny September 1983 afternoon, this
ALCO Ten-Wheeler pauses in a storybook setting. It is the
"jewel" of the Mid-Continent RR. These last 19 miles into
Madison will draw hundreds of rail fans to trackside for "a
taste of steam."
    

AMTRAK'S AUTO TRAIN
Twin GE AMD-103 "Genesis" locomotives No. 808 and
800 lead the popular Auto Train southbound over the
Occoquan River at Woodbridge, Va. on July 22, 1993.

GRAND TRUNK WESTERN 6315
4-8-4 class U-3-b No. 6315 was one of twelve
Northerns numbered 6312 through 6323 built by ALCO
in Schenectady, N.Y. January 1942. the 6315 is seen
here on the GTW at Milwaukee Jct., Detroit, Mich.
in 1957.
    

FLORIDA EAST COAST 673
One of a group of ten Electro-Motive GP9
diesel-electric locomotives, number 673 is at Smyrna
Beach, Fla., April 4, 1962. The ten GP9's were
numbered 667-676 and built by EMD in February
1957.

GAINESVILLE MIDLAND 209
Decapod 209 and caboose depart the yard at Athens,
Ga. in 1956. The Midland operated forty miles of
track between Gainesville and Fowler Junction plus
two miles of trackage rights over the Seaboard Air
Line to Athens. 2-10-0 209 came from SAL and was
built by Baldwin in 1930.
    

GULF & MISSISSIPPI 8025
Illinois Central Gulf sold off some lines in Tennessee,
Alabama and Mississippi and are now operated under
the Gulf & Mississippi banner. Former ICG GP10
sports a close match to the last Gulf, Mobile & Ohio
colors at columbus, Miss., January 20, 1986.
