ROCHESTER & SOUTHERN
A new shortline was born on July 21, 1986. The
Rochester & Southern began operations as a
subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Industries when the
line from Rochester to Ashford, N.Y. was purchased
from the Baltimore & Ohio - Chessie System. Train
RS-2 is northbound near Bliss, N.Y. with merchandise
freight, March 19, 1987.
    

BANGOR & AROOSTOOK 81
It's only November and Northern Maine Junction has
an adequate amount of snow on the ground for good
winter photography. BAR 81 and 85, two GP38's, are
ready to leave, November 25, 1987.

SOUTHERN PACIFIC 3201
General Motors EMD model SDP45 locomotive leads
three additional units on a merchandise freight at
Conant, Calif. June 22, 1987. The lead unit, No.
3201, and one other are in the proposed merger, with
Santa Fe, paint scheme.
    

SAN JOAQUIN
Amtrak train No. 703, one of the daily trains
from Bakersfield to Oakland, Calif., passes
along a San Pablo Bay inlet at Pinole.
Locomotive 502 is a new General Electric
Daxh 8-32BWH.

PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD
The main electric shop for the Pennsylvania
Railroad was located at Wilmington, Del. This
shop also served Penn Central and Amtrak in
later years to maintain the fleet of GG1 and other
electric locomotives. GG1's monopolize the scene
in this October 1967 view.
    

READING BLUE MOUNTAIN AND NORTHERN 9168
Budd RDC-1 #9168 leads the Jersey Central Chapter
NRHS' Lehigh Gorge Ramble at Mud Run, PA on April
8, 2000. These recently restored Budd RDC's run
occasional excursions on the Reading & Northern's
former Lehigh Valley and Reading Lines.

UNION PACIFIC 4017
Big Boy 4017 makes a coaling stop at Harriman, Wyo.,
October 6, 1958. The Alco built 4-8-8-4 has a drag
freight in tow and will continue west. Twenty-five Big
Boys were built during the World War II years
1941-9144.
    

SUSQUEHANNA 2000
NYS&W Alco C-420 No. 2000 was originally built for
the Louisville & Nashville in 1966 as No. 1312. Freshly
painted in the popular yellow jacket scheme No. 2000
has just arrived in the Susquehanna''s Utica, NY yard (ex
DL&W) in May of 1982 to begin service on the new
Nothern Division. In early 1983 No. 2000 suffered a
crank shaft failure and was eventually scrapped at Little
Ferry, New Jersey.

PENNSYLVANIA EP20's 5851 & 5868
An A-B-A set of EP20's eased a passenger train out of
Union Station and through the crossovers at Chicago on
June 29, 1957. The five stripe EP20 5851 led the consist
past another set of EP20's on its eastbound trip on a
clear day in the "Windy City". Originally delivered in
Brunswick Green, the EP20's had been repainted to
match the passenger cars.
    

READING BLUE MOUNTAIN AND NORTHERN 9166
R&N's Budd RDC-3 #9166 leads the Jersey Central
Chapter NRHS' Lehigh Gorge Ramble through Hetchel,
PA on April 8, 2000. The R&N operates occasional
excursions and daily freight over this scenic Lehigh
River Gorge Trackage.

BNSF 9954
....leads an eastbound train of Powder River Basin coal
through Creston, Iowa on October 23, 1998 as it heads
into the small yard for a crew change before continuing
on its way to a midwestern power plant. The new
SD70MAC's are sporting the colorful "Heritage II" paint
scheme.
    

FRIENDS OF THE 261
Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 No. 261 was built in 1944 by the
American Locomotive Co. One of its regular runs in the
1940's and early 1950's was on Milwaukee Road's River
Division main line along the Mississippi River between La
Crosse, WI and St. Paul, MN. On October 4 & 5 of 2003,
the 261 returned to its old route for the first time since the
1950's with an excursion sponsored by the non-profit
"Friends of the 261."

NEW YORK CENTRAL (P&LE) #4214
Train #24, The Morning Steel King, passed the section
foreman's office at New Castle, PA on August 29, 1956.
The train was a joint Erie/P&LE run from Cleveland to
Pittsburgh with a P&LE RPO, an Erie coach, and B&O
coaches. Alco passenger unit #4214 was one of two
model PA-2 units (4213-4214) built for the P&LE in
May 1952 and operated only 8 years until retirement in
December of 1960. The P&LE was part of the NYC
System, but operations were conducted separately.
    

ILLINOIS CENTRAL 100
Illinois Central E8 #100 is resplendent in fresh paint
outside the railroad's Woodcrest shops at Homewood,
IL on the morning of 7-26-95. The locomotive which is
ex-Burlington Northern E8Au 9901 is used on the IC
business train and has occassionally been pressed into
service on intermodal trains.

CAMAS PRAIRIE - RailNet
Two Ge B23-7's numberd 5 & 2 lead a Grangeville,
Idaho bound train on 8-31-98. Seen here crossing one of
26 trestles needed to raise this railroad from its
Lewiston, ID headquarters on the Snake river, up the
Lapwai Canyon to the fertile high prairies of western
Idaho. This railroad was constructed in 1908 as the
Northern Pacific's 'Clear Water' short line. These are
amoung the first locomotives to be lettered for CsP, as the
railroad was a joint NP-BN/UP operation since 1909.
    

WESTERN PACIFIC 771
Former General Electric U36B demonstrator
304 was rebuilt to a 3000 hp U30B and sold
to the Western Pacific. Builder's date, May,
1971.

AUTO TRAIN
A northbound Amtrak "Auto Train" on CSX's ex-ACL
main line is seen passing through Sanford, FL three
miles north of the Auto Train terminal in March of
1994.
    

BURLINGTON NORTHERN 1804
A Geep in Great Northern's sky blue colors
leads three mates on a freight westbound
just out of the Cascade Tunnel at Scenic, WA
August 8, 1970.

SOUTHERN PACIFIC 4449
Daylight 4449 rounds the bend at Ericson,
Calif., climbing towards Grass Lake en route
to Sacramento. The 4-8-4 and matching cars
made the trip in April 1991.
    

NORFOLK & WESTERN 1218
Class A articulated locomotive curves around the
bend at Oteen, N.C. on an excursion April 24, 1988.
The articulation can be clearly seen in this scene as
the front engine swings out from under the boiler to
lead the train around the curve.
