VALLEY RAILROAD 1647
Mikado 1647 was one of three newly built
Chinese steam locomotives to be placed in service
on U.S.A. tourist lines in 1990. The 2-8-2 can be
seen in service on the Valley Railroad between
Essex and Deep River, Conn., and occasionally
powers excursions on area railroads.
    

NEVADA NORTHERN 40
Ten-Wheeler No. 40 is on the High Line south
of McGill, Nevada, October 31, 1992. Occasion
was the Trains Unlimited trip. No. 40 is a
product of Baldwin, 1910.

SIERRA 49er EXPRESS
Locomotive 1001 is leading the Sierra 49er
through Jack London Square in Oakland, Calif.
Service, provided by Transisco Tours, between
San Jose and Reno, Nevada, started in January
1991. No. 1001 is one of three F45's obtained for
these trains.
    

SUSQUEHANNA 4002
Brand new GE B40-8 delivered to the New York
Susquehanna & Western along with three others are
seen on the Delaware & Hudson at Alplaus, N.Y. on
train PYPO, June 29, 1988. The four new units are
seen in numberical order, in the standard even number
Susquehanna numbering scheme, 4002, 4004, 4006, and
4008.

CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR
Amtrak's deluxe land cruiser, the California
Zephyr, crosses the Sierra Mountains through
the picturesque Donner Pass and Emigrant Gap,
Calif. This Chicago to Oakland, Calif., train also
travels over the Rio Grande railroad in Colorado
offering travelers a grand view of the Rocky
Mountains.
    

PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD,br> Turn the calendar back to November 8, 1954, go
down to the riverbank and watch Pennsy's train
S-390 go by. Behind Baldwin-built Decapods, numbers
4629 and 4639, pushing on the rear. Typical
Pennsy action at Paxinos, PA.

CANADIAN PACIFIC
A quartet of GP9 locomotives headed by
8621 skirts Kamloops Lake, B.C. with a
merchandise freight. A beautiful day in 1965.
    

ONTARIO NORTHLAND 1734
One of the new larger diesels, a General
Motors SD40-2 purchased April 1973, out-
side the Ontario Northland Railway shops at
North Bay, Ontario

CANADIAN NATIONAL 5568
A trio of new GMDD GP38-2 locomotives in
Montreal Yard, January 2, 1974. These new
locomotives, Canadian National class GR-20c,
feature the Canadian designed safety cab.
The full width cab also provides greater
crew comfort.
    

AMTRAK 509
The Santa Fe station at San Diego, Calif. has seen
many types of motive power, both steam and
diesel, through the years. Now, in August 1973,
one of the country's newest passenger locomotives,
an Electro-Motive SDP40F poses in front of the
mission style station.

CANADIAN PACIFIC 8201
A long string of auto racks stretch out behind
a few carloads of merchandise, and MLW unit and two GP30's. Scene is at the Mink
tunnel in 1964.
    

SOUTHERN PACIFIC
Early morning finds Espee SD40T-2 growling up
past Mormon Rocks near Cajon Junction, Calif. on
its way over Cajon Summit (Hiland) and on to
Bakersfield in the San Joaquin Valley. August
24, 1974.

MISSOURI PACIFIC
Train of 119 cars destined for Kansas City and
points beyond prepares to depart Pueblo, Colorado
with five GP38's. August 2, 1973.
    

PREAMBLE EXPRESS
The American Freedom Train Foundation's "Pre-
amble Express" is ready to depart Lebanon, N.J.,
home of the Foundation's offices, for a four
month tour of the U.S.A. Preparations are being
made during the tour for the 1975-76 trans-
continental tour of the 22 car, steam powered
American Freedom Train.

ROCK ISLAND 225
New General Electric model U25B, delivered the same
month the picture was taken, September 12, 1965, is
seen at Blue Island, Ill. In 1980, the 225 was sold to
the Maine Central RR.
    

ELECTRO-MOTIVE
A pair of SD60 locomotives lead BN units and train
at Marias Pass, Mont., June 30, 1987. The two units,
Nos. 9075 and 9032, are owned by Oakway, Inc. and
leased to the Burlington Northern on a megawatt-
hour basis.

MASS. BAY TRANSIT AUTHORITY 1056
MBTA train No. 116 crossing the causeway across the
Annisquam River in Gloucester, Mass. All of the
equipment on this train is new as of 1987. The
coaches are from Canada and Germany. The engine is
one of the last order of diesels to be built at GM's
La Grange plant, classed as an F40PH-2C and rated
at 3000 h.p. with 64'3" frame, this is the newest and
most economical commuter rail equipment in the
Boston area. March 2, 1988.
    

MORRISTOWN & ERIE 17
Alco Century 430 No. 17 and train are seen at
Whippany, N.J. on a stormy evening, July 26, during
the 1988 National Railway Historical Society Conven-
tion. M&E 17 is one of two C430's the railroad owns
and both were originally built for the New York
Central in December 1967.

CENTRAL RAILROAD OF NEW JERSEY CAR 97
Business Car 97 built by Pullman in 1916 as Car
99, Lot 4411 and named Jersey Central. Car 97 has
original interiors featuring rare Circassian Walnut
paneling from Asia throughtout. Two of the three
staterooms are paneled with Spanish Mahogany, while
the third has quarter sawn English Oak. The
sideboard and library desk in the dining room feature
ornate leaded stained glass panels as do doors at
each end of the hallway past the staterooms.
Car 97 was based in Jersey City and used by both
the Central Railroad and parent Reading. It became
neglected almost beyond hope before being rescued in
1971 and restored to original prints by Douglas Brown
near Philadelphia. Restored Car 97, restored and
rechristened Jersey Dawn, ran frequently on Amtrak
in the early 1980's. The present owner stables her in
Florida.
    

KALAMAZOO, LAKE SHORE & CHICAGO 85
Rebuilt to a GP7U, No. 85 is seen in Paw Paw,
Michigan, on Halloween 1987. The railroad's slogan,
as noted on the locomotive, is "Serving Michigan's
Wine Country".
