UNION PACIFIC 9201
Two new General Electric model C40-8's lead two
additonal diesels with mostly TAFC (trailer on
flat car)loads at Borie, Wyo., September 18, 1988.
this group of 75 Dash 8's, numbered 9175-9249,
were deliverd in mid-1988,
    

KATY 367
Passing the tower in Fort Worth, Texas, a quartet
of Electro-Motive SD40-2's have the merchandise
freight well in hand on the Missouri-Kansas-
Texas Railroad on April 4, 1988 during its last
days.

COTTON BELT 819
Built in Pine Bluff, Ark., Cotton Belt 4-8-4 heads
west to its place of birth through St. Francis, Ark.
Dubbed "Pride of Pine Bluff," 819 powered this
National Railway Historical Society Convention
Special on June 17, 1990.
    

COTTON BELT 819
Operating on an excursion through Illmo, Mo.,
to Pine Bluff, Ark., on June 17, 1990, Cotton Belt
4-8-4 819 passes westbound through Scott City,
Mo. The excursion was one of several operated
by the National Railway Historical Society for its
convention in St. Louis.

KATY 81-A
clean as a whistle, Missouri-Kansas-Texas Elec-
tro-Motive built FP7A shows off its new coat of
paint. Location is Parsons, Kansas, April 1972.
    

NEW GEORGIA 6902
Vintage E8 passenger diesel is seen near Port
Wentworth on April 7, 1990, as part of a three-
day weekend trip over the Norfolk Southern's
Coastal Division. The route, from Atlanta to
Savannah, Ga., and return, was over the former
Central of Georgia and Savannah & Atlanta rail-
roads. New Georgia's steam locomotive provides
the power for operation in the other direction.

ERIE CENTENNIAL TRAIN
The Erie Railroad was completed in 1851 and
in commemoration of 100 years of service a Cen-
tennial Train was operated. Two of the railroad's
new General Motors' EMD E8 passenger locomo-
tives, in an early low wing paint scheme, are
seen at Middletown, N.Y. with the train. In 1990,
two E8's were rehabilitated and numbered 834
and 835 and are expected to serve in excursion
service.
    

SANTA FE
Trailers and containers on flat cars have become
increasingly popular as a means of moving
goods over rail. Santa Fe does its share as seen
with a double stack Maersk Container train pass-
ing through Prewitt, New Mexico, September 15,
1990.

CHICAGO & NORTH WESTERN 8542
Chicago & North Western had General Electric
paint one of their new Dash 8-40C's in this spec-
ial scheme to help the state of Wyoming celebrate
its Centennial. The unit is shown fresh from the
factory at North Western's Proviso yard in West
Chicago. This one-of-a-kind unit will be assigned
to C&NW's Western Railroad Properties in the
Wyoming coal fields, to help move the massive
amount of coal that is generated out of the area.
    

CSX INSPECTION TRAIN
Fresh out of the CSX company shops in Way-
cross, Ga., where they received a coat of the new
"bright future" yellow and blue, two special ser-
vice F7's lead a shippers' special near Rocky,
N.C. CSX 116 and 117 make up half the fleet of
four passenger cabs the road keeps on hand for
specials and a few public excursions. Operating
out of Kingsport, Tenn., this special, operated
for Tennessee Eastman Chemical Co., is en route
to Jacksonville, Fla.

NEW GEORGIA 290
Pacific No. 290 stretches its legs during a three-
day weekend excursion in April 1990. The 4-6-2,
lettered for the Atlanta and West Point, passes
Norfolk Southern's River Street Rambler in the
road's Dillard Yard. The River Street Rambler is
a specially painted unit for switching Sava-
nah's historic waterfront River Street area.
    

ERIE MINIG 4211
Taconite trains, two or three per day, are hauled
between Hoyt Lakes, Minn. to Taconite Harbor
and reloaded on Lake Superior ore freighters.
Power for these runs are classy A-B-B-A F-units
as seen here at Hoyt Lakes on June 28,1988.

TRONA 54
Two of the three Trona Railway Baldwin AS616
diesels accelerate a string of covered hoppers at
Trona, Calif., August 17, 1988. No. 54 was built
in 1952 for Kaiser Steel, becoming Rayonier 14
before being purchased by Trona in 1986.
    

BRIMSTONE 35
Gear driven Shay locomotive No. 35 works for
the Brimstone Railroad near New River, Tenn.,
August 5, 1963. Brimstone No. 35 was built by
the Lima Locomotive Works in 1910.

EUREKA SOUTHERN
A string of classic ex-Southern Pacific passenger
cars trail behind second generation EMD model
GP38 No. 30. The excursion train is passing
through Dos Rios, California, August 20, 1988.
    

INDIANA 300
One of the newer members of the locomotive
fleet, GP9 No. 300, in colors reminiscent of the
Monon, is seen at Indianapolis, Ind. on June 18,
1988. The Indiana Rail Road operates 150 miles
of track in its namesake state.

TRI-RAIL 804
A new 67 mile commuter service between Miami
and West Palm Beach, Fla. was dedicated on
January 6, 1989. One of the five F40PHL-2's, No.
804 with unique bi-level coaches, is at Hialeah
nine days later.
    

BURLINGTON 892
Three classy Burlington Route - Colorado & Southern
diesels are on train 77 at Cheyenne, Wyo. on
September 1, 1969. The lead unit is GE U30C and
the rear two units are EMD SD40's.

SANTA FE 2105
Six axle Alco 2105 and EMD cow and calf 2418 haul
a cut of freight cars, October 17, 1954. Santa Fe
yard and switching freight locomotives were painted
in this black scheme prior to the blue and yellow
normally associated with the road in later years.
    

THE INDEPENDENCE LIMITED
Roanoke, Va. to Chicago, Ill.
June 9-12, 1988
Twenty-six passenger cars pulled by Norfolk &
Western A class 2-6-6-4 No. 1218 built at Roanoke
Shops in 1943. Photographed near Highway 102 west
of Bluefield at Bluestone, West Virginia on the
morning of June 10.
