AMTRAK
New technology on the railroad and rapid
transit! The German ICE Train (InterCity
Express) on loan to Amtrak makes an
appearance to the classic Santa Fe Mission
style station in San Diego, Calif., August 1993.
San Diego Trolley car 1056 is on the new
South Line Trolley extension.
    

FONDA, JOHNSTOWN AND GLOVERSVILLE
An FJ&G freight train bound for Broadalbin was ready
to leave the Gloversville, New York yards on November
4, 1958. Alco S-2 #20 is on the point of the train while
caboose #3 is bringing up the markers. Sadly, the FJ&G
ceased operations in 1984 after 114 years of service.

ST. LAWRENCE & HUDSON 5649
SD40-2 #5649 leads St. Lawrence & Hudson train 556
on this rainy first day of November 1997. The
Southbound train is about to go under the Brooker
Hollow Road Bridge just east of East Worcester, NY on
the old D&H line.
    

THE GENERAL
American type 4-4-0 Western & Atlantic Railroad's #3
"The General", of Civil War Fame, is seen not too far
from where it was built in Patterson, NJ, by Thomas
Rogers in 1855 as it crosses the East River on the
infamous Hell Gate Bridge. The General is under its own
power en route to the 1964 New York World's Fair.

EMD 75th Anniversary SD90MAC 8204
General Motors Electro-Motive Division's 75th
Anniversary open house was held on Sept. 21st, 1997 at
their LaGrange, Illinois plant with over 50,000 people
attending. The shining centerpiece of this all day event
was the new 6000HP SD90MAC. Weighing in at 425,000
lbs., 15' 7-7/8" tall and 80' 2" long, the 90MAC boasts
world class fuel efficiency with the hghly reliable
GM16V265H model engine. The new ITB2830 AC
traction motors provide greater tractive effort. Equipped
with radial self-steering trucks, it also boasts higher
braking effort capabilities, WhisperCab with state-of-
the-art features and a full Horsepower speed of 75 mph.
    

UNION PACIFIC 400
Big Boy 4004 has a 96 car drag freight behind
its multi-wheeled tender east of Emkay,
Wyoming, October 7 1958. The 4-8-8-4s were
considered to be the largest steam loco-
motives in the world.

UNION PACIFIC 829
Northern 829 heads a 72 car train of mainly
stock cars through Grand Island, Nebraska,
October 10, 1959. Classed FEF-2, 829 was part
of a group of 4-8-4s, numbered 820-834, built
by Alco in 1939.
    

SPIRIT OF CUMBERLAND
CSXT 700 The Spirit of Cumberland, rests between
assignments at Bayard, WV on 12-1-98. This is the class
unit of 25 SD70MAC's, the first AC units CSX ordered
from EMD. With 4000-h.p., radial (self-steering)trucks and
powerful AC traction motors, the SD70MAC's were
purchased specifically for coal and other heavy drag service.

CHESAPEAKE & OHIO 614
The Greenbrier Class J3a 4-8-4's, built in 1948 by Lima
Locomotive Company, were the C & O's finest
mountain passenger locomotives. Number 614 was the
last commercially built passenger steam locomotive in
the United States. It is seen here blasting past the old
Erie Depot at Port Jervis, NY during a series of photo
runbys which highlighted an excursion from Hoboken,
NJ to Port Jervis on October 12, 1997. The 614 is
currently owned and operated by Iron Horse Enterprises,
Inc. of Lebanon, NJ.
    

UNION PACIFIC 4011
A 64 car merchandise freight, with Big Boy
4011 up front smoking across the prairies, is
west of Lynch, Wyoming, October 6, 1958.
Aptly named, the 4-8-8-4's were considered by
many to be the largest steam locomotives in
the world.

PENNSYLVANIA 6755
M-1 6755 is in charge of this Northumberland to Enola
freight on August 26, 1956. The 4-8-2 hustles over the
Susquehanna River Bridge as it heads out of the yard.
    

CHICAGO & NORTH WESTERN 6720
This train seems to be over powered with three big
Alco six motor diesels on the head of only six cars.
The scene is at Ishpeming, Mich. and the power is
Alco Century model 628. September 27, 1980.

TIOGA CENTRAL 240
There aren't many Alco RS-1's remaining in the
country in the early 1990's, but Tioga Central
has this one. The 1000 h.p. road switcher is a
World War II baby, part of a 1944-45 order to
the New York Susquehanna & Western. 240
wears a fresh coat of original colors and number,
but lettered for its new owner, and is seen at
Owego, N.Y., November 16, 1990.
    

ST. LAWRENCE & ATLANTIC 1758
A Directors Special heads west out of Portland,
Me. over the Presumpscot River on the new St.
Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad, Sept. 21, 1989.
The railroad operates 150 miles of former Grand
Trunk Railroad from Portland to Island Pond,
Vt.

FERROCARRILES NACIONALES DE MEXICO DH-19
Four former Santa Fe and then Delaware & Hudson
Alco built PA passenger locomotives were sent to
Mexico on long term lease in 1978. After some
passenger service, the units were stored due to
damage. Five years later one was rebuilt for Star
Service and is seen here at the Empalme, Sonoro
Shops, January 23, 1989.
    

CHESSIE SYSTEM
A westbound Chessie System freight passes the
station at Covington, Va. on September 3, 1982. EMD
power sandwiches a GE unit.

UNION PACIFIC 6106
New EMD model SD60M is the first U.S. model
to incorporate the new "North American" safety
cab. No. 6106, seen here at Denver, Colo. on Sep-
tember 24, 1989, is one of a gruop of 131 units
numbered 6085-6215 delivered in 1989.
    

MOUNTAIN DIESEL 1512
Former Alaska Railroad EMD FP7's head a pass-
enger consist including a dome car on Sep-
tember 23, 1989. The excursion train is seen at
Albany, Wyo.

SANTA FE 101
The famous passenger train heritage lives on!
Model FP45 diesel-electric locomotive is on dis-
play at General Motors Electro-Motive Division
open house in celebration of FT freight hauler's
Fiftieth Anniversary Sept. 717, 1989 at LaGrange,
Ill.
    

BURLINGTON NORTHERN 7306
A member of the growing fleet of locomotives
leased to America's railroads, 7306 is supplied
to the Burlington Northern by GATX Leasing
Corp. The six axle unit is at Denver, Colo., Sep-
tember 24, 1989. No 7306 is one of ten former
Missouri Pacific SD40's.
