BOSTON MBTA 7538
Operation of former Conrail/Penn Central
lines out of South Station for commuter
service is now the responsibility of the Bos-
ton MBTA. 7538 was painted in new colors
for this service, seen in South Station Aug-
ust, 28.1977, but may be one of a kind as
the public thinks it's too gawdy.
    

NATIONAL RAILWAYS OF MEXICO
A pair of new six motor power for the National
Railways of Mexico on display at the 50th anniversary Electro-Motive celebration, Sep-
tember 9, 1972 at the McCook, Ill. plant. Loco-
motives 8703 and 8701 are new SD40-2 models.

COLORADO & WYOMING RY.
Empty Colorado & Wyoming coal train be-
hind GP7's 104 and 101 at Segundo, Colo.,
November 15, 1973.
    

PENN CENTRAL 5033
Freshly painted, in MTA-PC colors, FL9 at
Harmon, N.Y., September 10, 1975. FL9's
are diesel electric/electric's for service on
mainline trackage and third rail pickup into
Grand Central Terminal, New York. Devel-
oped by EMD, the FL9's were originally
delivered to the New Haven.l

VIA TURBO
Canadian National's United Airdraft Turbo
in new VIA colors makes one of the two runs
between Montreal and Toronto. Turbo 129
and train passes westbound through Guild-
wood, Ontario about 1/2 hour out of Union
Station, Toronto, September 6, 1977
    

PROVIDENCE & WORCESTER 165
On February 3rd 1973, the resumption of the
operational control of the Providence & Wor-
cester Co. took place after almost 85 years of
the Penn Central. Shown here at Woonsocket,
R.I. is one of five diesel units acquired from the
Delaware & Hudson. The engines are numbered
161 to 165. February 14. 1973.

Alco FA-1 freight unit with matching B unit
number 1606c at Cheyenne, Wyoming in

NORFOLK & WESTERN 531
New EMD GP30 locomotive as delivered to
the Norfolk & Western in 1964.

CONRAIL
A Director's Special, symboled OCS-111 (Office
Car Special), travels north along the Hudson
River across Iona Trestle at Bear Mountain,
N.Y., January 16, 1988. This train travels
system wide to inspect the railroad with
officials and shippers.
    

UNION PACIFIC 3300
Stars and bunting stripes decorate Union
Pacific's "United Way" SD40-2 number 3300.
Scheduled to tour the railroad and be
displayed at various United Way functions,
the colorful diesel was seen at Council Bluffs,
Iowa, August 22, 1994.

UNION PACIFIC 3985
The clouds break and the evening sun glints
off Challenger 3985 for the last runby of the
day, south of Ellis, Ill. for the National
Railway Historical Society's trip to Findlay,
Ill., July 22, 1993. Challenger 3985 celebrated
the 40th year of Union Pacific's steam
program and its 50th birthday this season.
    

TEXAS CHIEF
Santa Fe steam generator car equipped train
No. 16, the eastbound Texas Chief led by
302L, departs Norman, Oklahoma, June 1,
1970, on a hot afternoon.

CHESSIE SYSTEM 614
Former Chesapeake & Ohio 4-8-4 emerges
from the Harpers Ferry Tunnel on a Safety
Express excursion from Baltimore to
Martinsburg, W. Va. This October 1981 scene
is viewed from the Winchester Line Bridge.
    

SOUTHERN PACIFIC 8150
Visitors to Conrails's yard in Cleveland, Ohio.
En route to their new owners, new Dash
9-44CWs take a rest while in transit from the
builder, General Electric, in Erie, Pa., October
11, 1994. SP will take delivery of 100 of these
super cab locomotives, numbered 8100-8199.

CSX 21
New General Electric AC 4400CW is CSX
colors, reminiscent of the Chesapeake & Ohio,
is seen at Willard, Ohio, an old Baltimore &
Ohio stronghold, November 19, 1994. A new
era in CSX power, the introduction of AC
power, prompted CSX to give these units a
unique number series and lighting bolts.
    

AMTRAK
October 1992 weekend Amtrak trains and San
Diego Trolleys are trackside at the San Diego
Depot. The light rail vehicles are on the new
South Line Trolley extension which will be extended three miles to Old Town in 1996.

AMTRAK 815
One of Amtrak's newest locomotives, a
General Electric AMD-103, visits New
England briefly on an MBTA run to Boston
from Providence, R.I. Locomotive 815 with
train 806 passes the State Capitol, August 30,
1994. Forty-four of these 4,000 h.p.
locomotives were delivered to Amtrak in
1993.
    

THE YANKEE CLIPPER
Amtrak train 170, The Yankee Clipper, is en
route northbound from Washington, D.C. to
New York City along the Northeast Corridor
at milepost 117.

UNION PACIFIC 9213
A double stack container train is powered by five of
Union Pacific's diesel locomotives passing through
Archer, Wyo. September 18, 1988. General Electric is
still building more of these C40-8's as the train rolls
along. A total of 225 units will be built from
November 1987 to mid-1989.
    

CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR
Only a year old, the country's most famous
train, the California Zephyr is westbound in
Altamont Pass east of Livermore, Calif. an
hour east of Oakland, its destination, April 22,
1950. The CZ, train No. 17, provided luxury
travel from Chicago to California with
sleepers, dome cars, full diners and coaches
for two decades.
