ILLINOIS CENTRAL 2016
This trio of model SD20 locomotives was rebuilt
by Paducah Shops from EMD SD six axle
locomotives in 1980. The three units, 2016, 2023
and 2015, bring a freight southbound past the
old steam locomotive coaling facility at Effing-
ham, Ill., July 8, 1989.
    

NEW YORK CENTRAL 4051
A pair of E8s passes tower B eastbound bringing
its train to Albany Union Station and the station
stop. The time is during the first month of the
Penn Central merger, February 22, 1968.

BURLINGTON NORTHERN
Much of America's coal for energy and industry
originates at the mines in Wyoming's Powder
River Basin. A new railroad line was built to
service these mines. Burlington Northern six
motor SD locomotives bring a loaded train of
hoppers south on this line north of Reno Junc-
tion on June 26, 1990.
    

FNM DH-17
In the continuing saga of the Santa Fe/D&H PAs,
Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Mexico repainted
DH-17 in Southern Pacific's Daylight colors. The
Alco is seen at the Empalme Shops, Sonora, Feb-
ruary 28, 1992, and is expected to be used in
Empalme-Nogales service.

SONORA BAJA CALIFORNIA 2203
The last operating EMD FT was restored to
operating condition using an upgraded prime
mover and electrics from a GP18 at Mexico's Ben-
jamin Hill Shops. Rebuilding was completed in
December 1991 and is seen at Benjamin Hill,
Sonora, February 27, 1992. An engineless FT B-
unit is expected to be restored and run with the
2203.
    

UNION PACIFIC 3593
An EMD SD45-2 was repainted in Desert Storm
camouflage colors in honor of Union Pacific's
66 employees that served in active duty. 3593
was released from the North Little Rock Shops
on February 27, 1991, for service throughout the
railroad's nineteen state system. On August 19,
1991, the locomotive was seen at Portland, Ore.
The "Desert Victory" colors disappeared on Oc-
tober 10, 1991, in favor of UP's traditional ar-
mour yellow.

NEW YORK CENTRAL 4056
Penn Central E8 locomotive, still in New York
Central colors, pulls a two car "Empire Service"
train westbound at Little Falls, NY, October 12,
1968.
    

MONON 514
Fresh out of the Alco plant in Schenectady,
NY, Monon 514 and sister Century 420
No. 513 await delivery, August 1967.

RIO GRANDE 3713
During World War II, in 1942, the Rio Grande
took delivery of their last five new steam locomo-
tives, 4-6-6-4s numbered 3710-3714. A total of
fifteen of these articulated locomotives, class
L105S, were built by Baldwin, the first ten in
1938. No. 3713 is seen in Salt Lake City, Utah in
1950.
    

CLINCHFIELD 200
A three car passenger extra operated for the
East Tennessee Railfan Club stops for photos
on the Pool Point, KY bridge across the
Pound River. No. 200 was purchased new by
the Clinchfield for the last vestige of passen-
ger service. Trip operated on June 21, 1975.

NORTHLANDER
Ontario Northland train No. 121 is about
to depart Washago, Ontario enroute Toronto
to Timmins, June 11,1977. This is one of
four similar trains built for Trans-Europe-
Express service between Switzerland and
Holland. Displaced by electrification in the
mid-1970's, the four trainsets were pur-
chased by the Government of Ontario.
    

NEW YORK CENTRAL 8278
A pair of Alco steam generator equipped
RS-3's make up part of the commuter power
pool at North White Plains, NY, September
1963. Unit No. 8271 coupled to the rear
of 8278 wears the newer simplified paint
scheme without the famous New York Cent-
ral lightning stripes.

JERSEY CENTRAL 54 55
Wearing their original orange and blue paint
scheme, Jersey Central F3 units rest at the
Elizabethsport, NJ terminal. Ten A units num-
bered 50-59 and five B units lettered A
through E were purchased from EMD in 1947.
    

FAMILY LINES SYSTEM
Electro-Motive model MP15AC switcher is
at North Charleston, SC in the new Family
Lines colors. Locomotive is Seaboard Coast
Line No. 4220. March 11, 1978.

CENTRAL VERMONT 3611
Former Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific Alco
locomotive sports a new image Central Ver-
mont paint job. Scene is at Brattleboro, VT
in early March 1978.
    

WESTERN PACIFIC 913
Orange and silver once again adorn a Western
Pacific F unit. The quasi freight/passenger
color scheme on 913 was brought about by
interested employees and fans. The F7 and
mates normally run the San Jose Turn and
is shown in Stockton, CA on July 23, 1978.

UNION PACIFIC 9002
New EMD model GP40X enroute from the
builder pauses in Chicago, IL, March 4, 1978.
Experimental model delivers 3500 h.p. to
four axles on new high-adhesion trucks.
    

SOUTHERN PACIFIC 7033
The old "Daylight" colors once again liven
Southern Pacific rails on four Morrison-
Knudsen TE70-4S units. These are rebuilds
of GE U25B's upgraded to 2800 h.p. with
the installation of Sulzer engines. Nos. 7031-
33 are at Sparks, NV on July 31, 1978

ALTON & SOUTHERN 45
Locomotive No. 45 was built by Alco in 1956 as a
1600 h.p. RS-3. The B-B diesel rests in the loco yard
in East St. Louis, Ill., Saturday, June 19, 1965.
    

ALGOMA CENTRAL RAILWAY
During the summer months, the Algoma Central
Ry. provides one day excursion "Agawa Canyon
Tours" with many coaches and dining car service.
But, in the winter, the typical consist of the every
other day service to Hearst is shown by train No. 2
arriving at the Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. station.
