The Westland Whirlwind H.A.S. Mk 22 helicopter which first flew in November 1952, was
based upon the American Sikorsky S-55 and was built under license from the US company. Over
400 were built in total and were used by all three British services mainly in a search and
rescue role. They also flew in action in Malaya, Suez and Borneo. The Whirlwind was powered
by a 600 h.p. Pratt and Whitney Wasp, however later versions had a more powerful 750 h.p. engine
installed and also carried a characteristic downward angled boom, and a larger diameter main
rotor. The Whirlwind had a maximum speed of 175 km/h and a range of 700km.
Made by Airfix and in scale 1:72.
