The F-4 was developed in the mid 1950s by McDonnell with the first test flights in 1958. The F-4 quickly set world records for speed at both high and low levels. First Lieutenant Buck Shuler, Jr. flew this F-4, named after his wife Annette, out of Cam Ranh Bay Air Base in South Vietnam from 1968 to 1969.

The Unsung Heroes Aviation series follows the same theme as the popular Unsung Heroes series of vehicles and helicopters - battle scarred and weathered aircraft with stories of the veterans who operated them. Each aircraft is meticulously researched with the input of both the veterans and aviation experts
