The C-130 Gunships were created in 1967, amidst the cauldron of battle in Southeast Asia. Lockheed's Hercules was the second type to be converted to gunship configuration, after the Douglas AC-47D, and the most capable. Equipped for the night interdiction role, the AC-130 went through a series of modifications, including the addition of sensors, weapons and defenses.
